As I’ve said before, we’re back raiding. My guild actually got a second 10-man group going this Tuesday and Wednesday. They start a little earlier than the first group and are mainly just learning the fights now, but I think they are going to do great. If we can get just 5 more people that seem to be available for that tues/wed slot, we might start moving to running 25. Why would we run 25 when we could run 2 10s? Well, I guess they like the idea of combining it all up and, supposedly, 25s are easier because there is a little more slack. So, say a couple DPS go down, you should still be able to beat the enrage timer (maybe).
On Tuesday this week, we rambled into Blackwing Descent and took down Magmaw and the Trons pretty quickly (comparatively). We’re really getting the hang of those fights and my part is pretty much automatic to me now. We moved on back to the Maloriak fight again but failed to get him down. We’re making good progress though. The biggest issue we seem to have is getting the adds down, during the “green” phase, quickly enough.
Wednesday night consisted of going to Bastion of Twilight and banging on Halfus. We thought it was going to be tough because we had a pretty horrible pick of drakes, but we got him down in only a few tries. The knowledge of the fight and the improvements we’ve had in gear have definitely helped! We then took some licks at Valiona & Theralion , the two dragons. We got a pretty good strategy down with where to go and when but just couldn’t pull it out by the time we had to call it. I think we got them to around 8% at one point.
Thursday we went back to take more of a shot at the dragons, but before that we successfully defended Tol Barad and then went to kill the raid boss there first. So, the dragons. We downed them! In what probably was going to be the second or third to last attempt, we finally got them down. It was the end of the second time for the second dragon and we were getting the “Deep Breath” again when we finally got them down. There was lots of hooting and hollering. I believe that nobody died except right at the end when our Mage had Engulfing Magic on them and blinked to the other side of the room.. The side that a “Deep Breath” was coming down.. Ooops..
So, I’m having a small issue. Well, it’s not really an issue, I know what to do to solve it. Wait, does that still leave it as an issue, just a solvable one? Anyway.. I’ve started getting upgraded gear. By this I mean EPICS! The problem is that some of these pieces (all of them so far) do not have +hit on them. Unfortunately the pieces they are replacing did. I know I can reforge stuff to get the hit up. I know I can gem or enchant for it too or even swap out other gear with equivalent but adding +hit. I’m just sad about losing some of the other benefits I gain from the stats I am losing. Of course, the new gear I am equipping probably offsets that.. Eh, I’m just whining .. It reminds me though that I need to go check if I can buy anything for my Valor Points. I believe I have enough for a decent item.
This became relevant especially last night when we downed Halfus and I got the Proto-Handler’s Gauntlets. These replace gloves that had +hit and so I couldn’t just equip them immediately (even though I had a gem for them and an enchant). This is 2 items I’ve now won from Halfus. One each time we’ve downed him. We did pretty well although I was blasted back into the wall and died just before he did..
After Halfus, we made our way back to Blackrock Descent and took out Magmaw in just a few tries and then 1-shot the Trons. We had 1 guy left standing at the end of that fight. The DK tank. It was pretty crazy there at the end.
We moved on to Maloriak but couldn’t get him down. It’s definitely an interesting fight. The only issue we were having is with the adds and timing how many to release and then getting them down during the “Green” phase.
In other news, I’ve been still messing with my professions and getting them leveled, slowly. I also got my Warlock to level 80! She decided that Hyjal was the way to go and so we headed there. It’s amazing how underpowered she feels but then I started getting some of the lower quest greens and it’s AMAZING the improvement. I’m used to my leveling toons having some decent gear (at least some token gear if not T10 – First 2 85s had T10 starting out) so this was a shock. I am having a great deal of fun playing her and I know I am going to get incinerated by some people I know but it’s a lot like playing a hunter.
So, that’s about it so far. I need to find time to get my Druid into some non-heroic dungeons and start getting her geared up. I can already see some boss fights might benefit from having a boomkin along.. Have a good one.
I bet you are thinking I am going to complain about the difficulty of Heroic Instances in Cataclysm. Well, I’m not. I think they are just fine (well, they might take a little too long sometimes). What I am going to talk about a little is my thoughts on a certain Raid Boss mechanic. Not AOE damage or Enrage timers or elemental resistances. No, I’m a little miffed at something that changes the boss mechanics randomly, week to week. And the boss I am going to use as my Guiney Pig is Halfus.
See, in this fight there is the boss, Halfus. There are also, arranged around the room 4 shackled drakes and a cage of whelps. Each week you go pay a visit to him, 3 of these will be awake and the other 2 asleep. Based on which are awake, Halfus’ abilities will change. Oh, I forgot about his protodrake that spits fireballs and more to do raid damage all through the fight. So, depending on which drakes are the ones that are awake, the fight is different. This can range from “Difficult but not impossible” to “Wow, that was crazy” to “OMGWTF I’ve spent 1000g wiping on this dude tonight!”.
If you can’t tell, I have a problem with this idea. I don’t mind learning a fight. I don’t mind wiping on a fight. What I dislike is walking into the encounter and hearing on vent, “Oh, darn [paraphrasing here for the youngsters] we got a bad group of drakes this time”. The abilities that the drakes bestow/remove/etc are not particularly balanced as far as I can tell. I’m not going to go on and on about this topic but I just feel that there are enough variables involved in most encounters already that adding this randomization is really not necessary. However, if they do want to have something like this, maybe make it change per wipe like the “trons” encounter where a different tron is up first each time possibly.
So, there is my rant. Sorry, but I just wanted to get that out there. I can understand the “excitement” or whatever you call it that can come from an encounter that does this, but it also seems to increase the amount of preparedness necessary to combat with this small random factor. What do you think?
