I’m officially annoyed. I finally got the Bioshock PC demo to download last night from fileplanet (only the “same” day as it gets released) and this morning I copied it to my laptop to install at work.
I installed it (went fine) and tried to run it. Mind you, I have an HP DV9500T laptop with an nVidia 8600M GS, a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo running Vista (I know this is probably the culprit.. Came with Vista though) . Hmm.. Brought up the main menu. Changed some settings (key bindings, etc) and then ran the demo. Well, I got a screen with the initial part in the airplane and then the Bioshock logo with the moving light point comes up. All audio is working correctly (fyi). After the bioshock logo, though, I got a “shock” of my own when the game crashed back to the desktop with a “Bioshock.exe has failed to run” or something like that error from Vista.
In the Event Viewer I get this: Faulting application Bioshock.exe, version 126.96.36.199, time stamp 0x46c2290a, faulting module Bioshock.exe, version 188.8.131.52, time stamp 0x46c2290a, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0048c4a4, process id 0x1284, application start time 0x01c7e420951ca6f9.
There is another error after that where windows collected the dump or something, but this is the main error… I hope the full game doesn’t cause the same issue. I do have my desktop machine at home (the one I was really going to play on) that is Dual-Boot. I am going to try it on Vista first since I’d like to see how DX10 looks with my 8800GTS I just got for that system.
I guess I could try posting something in whatever official technical help forums I can find, but in an hour I’ll get to try out the full version I pre-ordered from Steam.
Wish me luck.. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I tried to find out how to turn on logging in the demo (or find the log file), but I was unsuccessful. I tried lots of stuff like run as administrator and turning down all the graphical goodies and running in windowed mode. No luck.
I’ll give an update when I play the full game. I’m still really looking forward to this!
